Fungi tend to reproduce sexually when nutrients are limited or other conditions are unfavorable, but they reproduce asexually in more ideal conditions. Why is this strategy successful?
Fungi is able to thrive in a variety of environmental conditions. They are able to derive nutrients from remains of dead organisms (saprobes) to living plants and animals. They are even able to use radiation from surroundings as energy to perform chemical reactions needed to survive. Though most fungi are aerobic (needing oxygen to survive), fungi could also be anaerobic by surviving in the digestive systems of some animals. With that being said, the reason fungi reproduce sexually when nutrients are limited is so that by evolution, the offspring that they produce would similarly be able to withstand the same unfavorable conditions in the future. The idea is that offspring produced sexually in stressful environments would yield greater genetic variation.
