A.      In a recent survey by Cengage, results showed the vast majority (79%) of adult college students say their experience in college has been “moderate,” (versus 9% who say it has been difficult), suggesting that adult learners (who began college later) may actually have an advantage over traditional students who started college right after high school.

Adult college students may have an advantage because they have had more time to learn how to manage stress. Do you agree with the results of this survey? Why or why not? (Discuss based on your own experiences as well as the available research, provide your sources in APA format).

B.  Considering what you have learned about the stress response, incorporate elements of the brain’s response to stress when discussing your answer. Your initial post should be two to three well-developed paragraphs.

Our society has seen many changes over the last 50 years or so. Neuroscientists believe our addiction to technology is making us less efficient and leads to more stress.

1.      Read the article link below on “Why the Modern World is Bad for Your Brain”. Discuss why the author believes our brains are not designed to multitask.

2.      How does multitasking increase our stress levels? (discuss both nervous and endocrine system involvement).

C.  David Morris, a war correspondent and former Marine infantry officer, talks about the history of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the 27 million Americans, including himself, who suffer from PTSD today. He discusses his own struggle with the disorder after encountering multiple traumatic events overseas. You can view a brief discussion of his experiences at the video link below. His radio interview provides a more in-depth look into his experiences overseas.

Why do you think Morris’ symptoms of PTSD became more exaggerated after a period of two years? Why do you think some individuals develop PTSD symptoms while others do not, even when faced with the same situation?

Morris states that he personally found alcohol in moderation to be one of the “best PTSD drugs ever invented” and that other survivors have agreed with him. What do you think of this statement?

As you read the articles about stressors and coping, think about how you currently deal with stressors in your life. For your initial response, discuss and evaluate how well you deal with the top 3 stressors in your life.

Finally, choose a stress-coping technique not discussed in the Module 4 lecture material and write a summary sharing what you learned about this technique and its effectiveness on stress management.
