Classroom Observation: What should you see?

Using the teaching strategies in the course text (Dean et al., 2012) as a guide, assume you are observing a teacher instructing a 60-minute lesson.

You may use a lesson plan you have previously developed or one obtained from an outside source. The lesson should be in your specialized/trained subject area (e.g., high school social studies, middle school math, elementary classroom). It should be a lesson that would take about an hour to complete.

Your assignment submission should include the following:

  • Objectives for the lesson
    • What do you think the teacher would want students to learn?
  • State standards addressed, if any
  • Teaching strategies you might observe for the following categories:
    • Forms of recognition
    • Cooperative learning techniques
    • Cues, questions, and advance organizers that should be included in the lesson
    • Implementation of summarizing and note-taking
    • Appropriate homework/practice for students
  • Detailed explanation of lesson
    • Include the expected teacher and student behavior relative to instruction
  • Lesson closure
    • How would the teacher determine if students have learned/met the objectives?
  • APA-style citations and references
  • An example of each of the research-based strategies selected
