INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Screening Options:
    • As usual, read the watch list in this module to see your choices.
  • Deadlines:
    • Thursday night by 11:59pm: Respond to my prompts; follow the instructions below.
    • Sunday night by 11:59pm. Respond to another student in a substantive way. Go far beyond “I agree” or “great post.” Engage with someone else’s ideas by doing something like asking a question, comparing posts, applying her/his example to your own post, come up with an alternative perspective, or similar. The goal is to expand the conversation.
  • Use The Readings:
    • The entire purpose of these discussions is to synthesize the readings (and lectures) with the film. Use quotations, bring in terms or concepts… find ways to illuminate the film by way of applying the readings.
  • Images:
    • Embedded images are really important for film discussions. See instructions below as to how you can easily capture and embed images from the film. If you choose not to include images there will be a small but not catastrophic point deduction.

Disaster Film Screening Questions:

  • Prompt: Write a substantive paragraph in response to one or more of the following. Feel free to combine questions.
    • How is the film evocative of horror in terms of standard generic traits, including: iconography, settings, story patterns, character types, and themes?
    • Further questions:
      • Does your film involve imagery of the city under disastrous distress? How does this connect with this genre’s themes?
      • Themes — Cynicism: How does your film express anxieties related to “modern historical reality” of the release period?
      • Themes — Moral Simplification: In what ways does the narrative overall, or the climax in particular, reflect a simplified “good/bad” answer? How does the rest of the film undercut such simplified logic?
      • Themes — Diplomacy: Does your film incorporate overcoming national differences in the service of the greater good, to solve or address the disaster? How is that diplomacy shown as a challenge and/or a success?
      • Themes — Neutralizing or Inuring Us to Disaster: How did your film contribute to desensitizing the viewer toward disaster, visually or in the narrative overall? Did you find your self feeling complicit “with the abhorrent?”
      • Extra Credit Question: Existential Angst/Depersonalization of Modern Life: How does the film express Sontag’s “anxieties about contemporary existence? In what ways is humanity at risk broadly, or specifically in terms of technological innovations, the fear of insanity, other ways? How is that anxiety resolved at the end? (See reading and lecture.)

80s/90s Action Film Screening Questions:

  • Prompt: Write a substantive paragraph in response to one or more of the following. Feel free to combine questions.
    • Examine how your film address one or more of traits drawn from Grant and the lecture:
      • How does the film incorporate social and cultural changes in terms of the family, gender, etc? 

      • Does the film represent hypermasculinity? 
Musculature? Physical strength? Strategic, quick thinking?
      • In what ways is “musculature” privileged or prioritized over narrative and character?
      • Does the film bear evidence of Jefford’s “working class white masculinity in crisis?” If so, how? Which characters, actions, scenes?
      • Does the film also present a “woman warrior?” 
As the reading demonstrates, this was a fairly new figure to the action film in the 80s.
      • Does the film present the enemy in nationalized terms? In other words, is racism part of the conflict propelling the narrative?
      • Do you see evidence of previous action eras in your film? (See lecture.)
      • In what ways is this film typical of the action genre? Atypical? 

      • Extra Credit Question: How is the film evocative of action’s “ideological contradictions?” (See lecture.)
