Chapter 7 of the textbook discusses adolescent suicide. Select a group that could be considered a minority or a member of an underrepresented identity group based on one or more of the following characteristics: ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability/disability [mental, physical, and cognitive], religion, age, or socioeconomic class. Identify the group you selected and and discuss the potential suicide risk for this group. What factors may make members of this group more or less likely to attempt suicide than members of other groups? What support can be given to individuals and/or communities to decrease suicide risks for the group you selected? Rely on research findings to answer these questions.
Suicide is one of the most pressing issues in Society of the United States.”About 34,600 deaths are due to suicide in the United States each year (U.S. Census Bureau, 2011). The number of adolescent suicides in the United States“tripled between the mid-1960s and mid- 1990s,â€with a subsequent small decline since then (Berk, 2012b, p. 631).”(Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016) The group that I would like to focus on his African Americans from the age of 13 to 24. For so many young African-Americans early life is a general hardship. A large number of African Americans from a young age hardly have enough resources or means to get them due to living below the poverty line. One reason I believe this to be is given such impoverished circumstances it is hard to see hope and as young individuals we have a limited on how precious time is and how short time is. That being said young individuals often see their circumstance as something that is permanent as opposed to something that can be changed or temporary. Couple that with now needing to income household or single parents work multiple jobs to maintain what little they already have in many cases these children of their families and ancestors. Many of these children are being left to receive their worth from television, peers and other outside influences. ” Furthermore, the suicide rate among African American youth is growing at a disproportionate rate compared to all other races and increased 133% for 10- to 19-year-old African American youths (CDC,2006).” (McAdams & Zapata-Gietl, 2015) At-large our Society has moved away from teaching of core values and personal responsibility. Suicide is a permanent fix to a temporary problem due to a perceived unchangeable circumstance. Teaching young individuals about self-worth and the power of their will to change their circumstance can go a long way to helping right the ship.
