Technology allows nurses to transform information utilizing data, so they can use evidence-based practices in their decision making to plan and manage patients care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Nursing informatics is used in the nursing practice to help nurses coordinate patient care. The continuous use of data emphasizes how data uses facts such as patients medical history of blood results to make decisions and provide care. This continuum offers insight into how nursing informatics contributes to different levels of understanding, decision-making, and evidence-based practice. Data-to-wisdom continuum is the application of knowledge gained from data and the nurse utilizing her nursing knowledge gained from her education or evidence-based research to address patient’s problems at it relates to evidence-based practice (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).

For example; lab results or diagnostic test results are a part of a patient’s data which when reviewed by a physician is given a diagnosis, and these diagnosis helps nurses formulate a plan of care. Nurses are held responsible for providing patients’ with various nursing interventions on how to manage their medical problems, and use data along with their nursing education and evidence-based information in their wisdom will help to provide optimal care while keeping the patient’s ethical values in mind (Dammann, 2018).

To incorporate the data-to-wisdom continuum in my nursing informatics job description I would ensure that nurses have the ability to gather, interpret, and integrate the best available research, utilizing a care plan based on information available through available data, and evidence-base research into their nursing practice. The job description would also include nurses educating patients and their families on the available evidence on managing their illnesses so they can make well informed decisions as it relates to their healthcare.

Master’s Essential IX would be my essential of choice as it specifies that the master’s prepared nurse utilizing any form of nursing intervention that would persuade patient outcomes have the ability to understand science and knowledge to optimize patient care. If utilizing data and nursing knowledge through evidence-based research would improve patient outcomes then the master’s prepared nurses should be ready for the challenge (AACN, 2011).

Health care has evolved over the year. Information systems, information technology, information literacy, information management-information is all around us every day. Understanding how to evaluate the information available is critical to deciphering the true unbiased detail of the data. Although there is no control of the validity of data available on the Internet and the fact that there is an abundance of information, it does not necessarily mean the information on the subject is valid (Matney, Brewster, Sward, Cloyes, & Staggers, 2011). The following criteria designed to evaluate information, will help an individual find and use quality information. Some criteria to use is the source or authority reliable; is the data current; is it organized logically and easy to navigate; is it objective and free of bias, and is the data accurate and error-free. Developing a checklist and a form to assist with data collecting and decision making will serve as tools to enhance the evaluation of on-line material (2017).

Implementation of data-to-wisdom continuum is a key component for maintaining high quality healthcare services. Roles and responsibilities of nurse informatic specialists vary by facility but commonly involve areas of quality metrics, clinical documentation, and information technology support(Matney, Brewster, Sward, Cloyes, & Staggers, 2011). A risk management RN would fit the role of a data-to-wisdom informatic professional. Analyzing data through electronically recorded and saved health information to measure core value goals is a defining factor of the organization’s success and future endeavors. Risk management RN’s measure quality, safety, and risk for improving and maintain quality patient care and record keepings. Usability Evaluation of Electronic Health Record System for Nursing Professionals allows nursing perceptions about the impact of EHRs on patient care to influence reform efforts on quality and safety initiatives for patients. Understanding the usability of electronic health tools is critical to developing and maintaining health information technology that will assist clinicians in delivering high quality, cost-effective care.
