1. Review the Rhetorical Précis handout . Write a rhetorical précis for King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” following the exact format given in the handout.

Rhetorical Precis example

In order to describe quickly and effectively the argument and context an author presents in a text, use a format called the rhetorical précis. This form is a highly structured, four-sentence paragraph that records the essential rhetorical elements in any spoken or written discourse. The following is a breakdown of the information to include in each of the four sentences. Sentence 1: Name of author, [optional: a phrase describing the author], the type and title of the work, a rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “suggest,” “imply,” “claim,” etc.) that describes what the author is doing in the text, and a THAT clause in which you state the major assertion (thesis statement) of the author’s text.

Sentence 2: An explanation of how the author develops and/or supports the thesis (for instance, comparing and contrasting, narrating, illustrating, defining, using humor or sarcasm, relating personal experience, or using examples, research, data, statistics, etc.). Your explanation is usually presented in the same order in which the items of support are presented in the work.

Sentence 3: A statement of the author’s stated or apparent purpose, followed by an IN ORDER TO phrase, which explains the intended effect on the audience. Sentence

4: A description of the intended audience, tone, and/or the relationship the author establishes with the audience.

Sample Rhetorical Précis

In the preface to her book Everything You Think You Know About Politics…And Why You’re Wrong, Kathleen Hall Jamieson asserts THAT most people are not as educated about politics as they think they are. She supports this assertion with examples of political discourse, defining the term “soundbite” as an important mass media tool to effectively communicate candidates’ positions, and with a quiz that tests readers’ political knowledge. Her purpose is to make readers aware of ways in which they are misinformed about politics IN ORDER TO help them become better educated about the role of media and soundbites in political campaigns. She establishes an informal, moderately analytical, and occasionally witty tone with her audience of potential voters.

2. Select a portion of King’s text (a substantial paragraph or a few paragraphs), briefly describe one of the strategies he uses, and explain whether it creates an appeal to ethos, pathos, or logos. What overall point is King supporting with this appeal/strategy combination?
